Transparency and the SG

Editorial
April 14, 2010

As part of the student media, the main of goal of defacto is to promote transparency between the administration, faculty and students. But how can we expect transparency from the administration, when candidates to our own Student Government choose to stonewall the press when it comes to issues the electorate might find useful when electing their representatives?

A Martha Vineyard's Times report on the activities of the Martha Vineyard's District Court has come to our attention, according to which Jaba Shalamberidze, a current candidate for the Vice-Presidency of the Student Government and defacto reporter, was charged with assault and battery on July 23, 2009.

What shocked us is that neither Shalamberidze nor Elitsa Nacheva, who picked Shalamberidze as her running mate, agreed to talk to defacto on the issue. At a liberal arts university, like this one, where freedom of speech and transparency should be two of the main concerns of both of the administration and the student body, it shocks us that a candidate to the executive branch of the SG decided not to disclose information regarding such a sensitive issue.

Having in mind the recent decision of the elections committee to oblige the AUBG community to send all debate questions in advance to avoid "any kind of offensive campaigning towards any individual or office within the AUBG community," we are left to wonder what is happening to the SG when the freedom of speech is regulated, and the candidates are reluctant to talk.

By refusing to talk candidly with the student media, the Nacheva-Shalamberidze team are surrounding their campaign in a veil of mystery which we find unacceptable.

CHEAT

People talk about what happened, never mention WHY it happened. Don't put Jaba's moral under question, he does not have a single fine in AUBG, he never had a conflict with anybody and when it comes to treating women, I think we all know his girlfriend Darya, they are the sweetest couple on campus. I think all of guys saw the present he made for her in the first semester (the candles in a shape of a heart with around 200 pieces of Raffaello candies inside). They have had 7 months of great relationship with each other. As for maksimkina: She __CHEATED__ that's why she got a slap in her face.

Official Failure of the Anti-Violence Campaign

How can you even speculate on a woman "deserving" to be hit? Are you serious? This is undeveloped, anti-female Eastern Europeanness at its best. She "provoked" him? Well in somewhat more backward countries a man is allowed to hit a woman when she, for example, talks to neighbors over the fence, when he explicitly prohibits her to do that. BECAUSE SHE PROVOKED HIM! It's legal. On the continuum "Islamist attitude to a woman" - "Liberal Western attitude", your Eastern European attitudes would nicely fit in the middle :) Congratulations, my friends. We have this anti-violence campaign in November. And then we elect a vice-president who does what he did. Most people at AUBG do not cosider it an issue whatsoever. Why are you so sure that if he started by hitting and spitting at this age, he will not engage in violence years into his marriage? Let's throw empty "campaign" words into the air, and prove we think the opposite by our lowly actions.

so, beating men is okay? ))

Do you expect a person to

Do you expect a person to take "I hit her in the face!!!" as his election slogan? Don't be so naive. Dear those who have been in the US (or most of them), announce you broke the law buying alcohol underaged or walking home with a weed in your pocket; dear those who were brought up not in a multimillionaire family, announce when and where you have been fighting, dear those who started to smoke and drink alcohol before 18, you are inveterate criminals. Since all the fuss is about a criminal record (not about the moral stand of the person who hit the woman, whether she "deserved" it or not), not being caught does not make you better :)

To all those who believe a

To all those who believe a public figure (which Mr. Shalamberidze hopefully knowingly became having decided to run for the post) has the right to keep a criminal record a secret: take media law and ethics. Before writing up theses with no background support. Thank you, Anna Maksimkina Plaintiff

sheesh

DeFacto always looked more serious to me - and a bit more mature than that :) What's with the "freedom of speech" whining and all the "shock"? Was it really a criminal record? Maybe a minor offense? :) A guy had a fight in the US - OK, what's the big deal? He obviously has all the rights to keep silent about that, and that s just another part of freedom of speech. You asked him for comment - he refused. Naturally he would look slightly better if he gave a comment and described the situation - but he made his choice and he has his right to do that. All the hypocrites can go hide in the canteen, all the drama queens can follow them.

Anyone who knows at least a bit about life knows that "assault and battery" is what the court says. What was it in reality? Many will agree that putting a drugged imbecile in place is the right thing to do, but yeah, it can lead to "battery and assault" charges. Whatever. If you have more details on the case (cause now you have just ONE line of actual text) - give them, and then it's a discussion, then it's something to think of, not plain pre-election hysteria attempt. If he does not give you details - it's none of your business, you need to understand that. He might be damaging his image refusing to comment, but since it's his decision, all you have left to do is just report the fact without the liberal-nazism-freedom-of-speech hysteria.

Kind regards,

Alumnus

Hello there, BIG hello from

Hello there, BIG hello from that drunken imbecile that JUST so happened to be his girlfriend at the time who he hit in the face and spat at in front of 20 cops. Kind regards, Imbecile

Well deserved

Transparency? Ha!

Guys, you don't need to overdramatize something as trivial as an SG election. They come and pass like the seasons, and no one really cares afterwards. You know what you can do? You can try to see if there is any "social" spirit at AUBG - watch for the student body's reactions. Will they be "shocked" (bad word choice, by the way) too or will they just ignore it. Anyway, keep up the good work. (Gatekeeper, Legendary former DeFacto member)

Making history, aren't we?

Making history, aren't we? There comes a time when there is no middle way to take. When people show their true colors by whether they react or not. I could not be more proud with defacto bringing out the glaring facts, and taking a responsible position. Similarly, I could not be sadder that neither RadioAura, nor any of the official candidates for SG leadership or BoT-candidates acted, defending the basic democratic expectation that if you run for public office, you do not hide your criminal record.

Defacto stands proud today. More than any other day in its history, or in the history of AUBG student media, for that matter.

Shame for Defacto

Glaring facts? Are they really? Every person has a right to preserve it confidential. What happened to Jaba is his personal life and it has no connection at all with AUBG and with him being a good candidate for the position. He chooses not to discuss his private life not because he is ashamed of it, no, because he will not go down to your pathetic level where you bust your asses of to win the SG elections (or better to say, to make Elitsa lose the elections). Talking about moral and ethics, Ivaylo stop acting behnd a mask. You know why this matter about Jaba was brought up right at the last minute to emotionally influence AUBGers - this is called a dirty PR (Oh you are an admin on Klajdi's Facebook group, what a coincidence) Don't be said because non of the candidates stood by your side. They are ethical enough not to gossip and make allegations without facts. Nobody hid nothing, there is NO CRIMINAL RECORD ! And you are a plain gossiper. Who stands proud or not is not for you to judge. Defacto should be ashamed of what it did, the 'independent' student newspaper became a tool for certain people to satisfy their hatred towards certain people in the other team. Jaba's ex-girlfriend and her few friends (Anna Kadnikova) just hate seeing Jaba succeed, that is all. Before judging other people look at yourselves, how dirty your souls are. You talk about Jaba, but do you actually know him? You make allegations to a person as if you were eating a sunflower.

Kadnikova

1) Kadnikova is not in DeFacto 2) Kadnikova doesnt talk to DeFacto 3) Kadnikova has nothing to do with this article What else needs to be said?

I do not volunteer to educate

I do not volunteer to educate you. I will also not waste my time responding to anonymous slander.

Ivaylo

education

Please, don't waste our time either. We got enough of your education these past 10 days.

True... I'm learning to

True... I'm learning to restrain - and not only that, but find the right balance because sometimes there are issues about which you need to speak up. And compromise and consensus, which we so much adore in this university, might not be most appropriate (put mildly). Ivaylo

Come on!

What is the "shocked" reaction about? Sounds like writing that dilettantes would use, rather than media. Oh sorry, I forgot, it is an editorial... I would argue that transparency has to do with the actions that Student Government senators/officers take as part of their senatorial/executive duties, not with their personal lives. Is Jaba's record really an "issue the electorate might find useful when electing their representatives"? It would have possibly been smarter of Jaba to elaborate on the charges, but he was totally alright deciding not to, because it has to do with his personal life, and nothing to do with his performance as a potential SG officer.
